5 Local Food Joints on St. Thomas

You may come to St. Thomas for a slice of paradise, but it’s the food and the people that will truly make you fall in love with the island. And luckily for you, there are lots of fantastic places to stop and grab a bite while you’re here. Here’s a quick peek at some of our favorite restaurants where you’ll find a happy mix of island visitors and locals chowing down on outstanding food. Without further ado and in no particular order, here they are!

Cuzzins’

For an authentic taste of the Caribbean, be sure to stop by Cuzzins’. This local favorite is a regular haunt for locals and visitors to St. Thomas alike. It’s not just the conch fritters, fungi, or curried mutton that keep guests coming back. The service is excellent, friendly and attentive and with its cozy atmosphere and old red brick walls, you’ll soon feel right at home.

Gladys’ Cafe

Located in a historic building in the Royal Dane Mall in the heart of downtown Charlotte Amalie, Gladys’ offers up a delectable array of traditional Caribbean and American dishes that will have you coming back for more. Burgers, jerk chicken, conch, plantains, and a few excellent vegetarian options, will put a smile on everyone’s faces. They’re also known for their out of this world hot sauces made from scotch bonnets which (thankfully) they sell so you can take home as many bottles as you can fit into your luggage!

Sabroso

Make sure you make it a point to stop by Sabroso. Great for lunch, better for dinner, Sabroso has tasty wings, tacos, ribs, and chops. Not to mention a fantastic blackened salmon and shrimp creole if you’re craving a bit of spice. Much of the fish served up at Sabroso is locally caught, so you know you’re getting the best. Be sure to order one of their fantastic Painkillers from the bar.

De’ Coal Pot

De’ Coal Pot is de place to go for award-winning eats. With locations on both St. John and St. Thomas, you can stop by and get your fix on either island. Garlic herb conch, oxtail stew, roti, and plenty more are yours to wash down with some of their excellent house-made cocktails. This is another good spot if you’re a vegetarian or have on in your group (try the Veggie Delight or a veggie roti). Meat or meal-less, the portion sizes are generous, so before heading down, make sure you have some room to spare.

Sugarcane Grille

Another top notch restaurant with a healthy mix of local and American food, the Sugarcane Grille is located in the Bunker Hill Hotel. You can check out the stunning views of Charlotte Amalie harbor and the surrounding hillsides, assuming you can pry your eyes away from your plate! Their seafood dishes are delicious and people rave about their rum punch.

And because it’s virtually impossible to choose just five, here’s a bonus joint to check out!
